Words or Word Order – The Chicken or Egg Dilemma
Determining which comes first is much like serving a tennis ball from both sides of the court — it varies depending on age and individual learning preferences. There is no straightforward answer. In my approach to teaching, I prefer to emphasize vocabulary and phrases for younger learners, while placing greater focus on grammar and the fundamental principles of word order for older, more advanced students.
“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.” — Flora Lewis
When we talk about the delicate balance between vocabulary and word order, it is important to recognize that the two are interconnected but evolve at different stages of language acquisition. The beginner will learn to navigate daily interactions, even with minimal grammatical knowledge, to the best of of their ability, gaining confidence and building a foundation for more complex language skills as they progress and grow.
Though challenges are inevitable, they can also be enjoyable. Mastering verb conjugation, correct word order, and tense usage is crucial for fluency. As your fluency grows, so does your confidence, and with it, a deep sense of pride in your progress.

Wrapping Up with Key Insights
Mastering a new language is a dynamic process that requires both vocabulary and structural understanding. While beginners can start communicating with just a handful of words, true fluency emerges when vocabulary and grammar work together. The key is to embrace both aspects — building vocabulary naturally while refining word order and sentence structure over time. Challenges will arise, but with persistence and the right approach, learning remains an exciting and rewarding journey. Keep experimenting, stay consistent, and trust that every step forward brings you closer to fluency.
